Lightweight Build: The Rattlesnake Tactical RT15 Polymer Complete Lower Receiver Review

I am the farthest thing from a gun snob, having realized one can find practical and functional firearms and accessories without going "Gucci" and spending extravagant amounts of money on really fancy gear. In fact, I would rather have solid, functional gear over gear that is fancy and known for brand recognition. But I am also of the mindset of "Buy once, cry once." And for that matter, I've always looked upon polymer AR-15 lowers with a little bit of disdane. When building or customizing an AR-15, every component counts.

The lower receiver is particularly crucial as it houses the fire control group and the magazine well and provides the structural integrity necessary for handling operational stresses. Thus, when a polymer AR lower fell in my lap from Rattlesnake Tactical, I was a little dubious about it. Damn, if I didn't fall in love with it, though!

The Rattlesnake Tactical RT15 Polymer Complete Lower Receiver is a standout option for enthusiasts looking to build a new, lightweight rifle or upgrade their current setup. In this review, we’ll delve into the features, benefits, and overall performance of this product available at Ammunition Depot and show you how I built a fun and kind of unique range toy from my Rattlesnake Tactical RT15.

The Rattlesnake Tactical lower receiver comes ready to go right out of the box. All one needs to do is install an appropriate AR15 upper receiver to the lower and head to the range!

Overview of the RT15 Polymer Complete Lower Receiver

The Rattlesnake Tactical RT15 Polymer Complete Lower Receiver is designed for durability, performance, and affordability. Crafted from a high-strength polymer, this lower receiver is both lightweight and robust, capable of withstanding the rigors of extensive use whether in tactical environments or at the shooting range.

Key Features

  • Material: Made from a specially formulated polymer for enhanced strength.

  • Design: The RT15 features a minimalist design that reduces weight without sacrificing structural integrity.

  • Compatibility: It accepts all standard AR-15 components and magazines, making it incredibly versatile for various builds.

  • Finish: The black matte finish only adds to its aesthetic appeal. Black is Tacti-Cool!

  • Assembly: Comes fully assembled with all lower parts and a buffer assembly, making it ready for immediate use right out of the box.

The Rattlesnake Tactical RT15 comes assembled with fire control parts, mag catch, bolt catch, and recoil buffer assembly, and a six-position stock.

Benefits of Using the RT15 Polymer Lower Receiver

  • Weight Reduction: The polymer build significantly cuts down the overall weight of the firearm, which can enhance maneuverability and reduce shooter fatigue during extended use.

  • Cost-Effective: Typically, polymer lowers are less expensive than their metal counterparts, making the RT15 an excellent choice for builders on a budget without compromising quality.

  • Durability: Despite misconceptions about polymer, the RT15 is designed to endure the same harsh conditions as metal lowers, with high resistance to impact and environmental stressors.

  • Ease of Use: With all parts pre-installed, this lower receiver is ideal for both novice builders and experienced enthusiasts who appreciate convenience and efficiency in their building projects.

The included six-position stock offers an adjustable LOP (length of pull) to fit the Rattlesnake Tactical RT15 to multiple shooters.

Performance and Field Testing

Field tests of the RT15 Polymer Complete Lower Receiver show that it performs admirably under various conditions. The trigger action is crisp and consistent, and the material holds up well against typical field stresses, including dirt, moisture, and mechanical impact. Compatibility with different uppers and magazines was seamless, underscoring its versatility and reliability.

Personalizing the RT15 for a Dedicated .22 LR Build

The Rattlesnake Tactical RT15, built as a dedicated .22 LR pistol, makes for a fun and inexpensive to shoot range plinker!

One of the great perks of working for an FFL is the unique opportunities it presents, such as easily acquiring specific parts for personal projects. I had the chance to have my RT15 transferred to me as just a receiver from my boss—without the standard six-position stock—perfect for a custom build. I decided to convert this RT15 into a dedicated .22 LR firearm, utilizing the CMMG .22 LR Conversion Kit, which conveniently doesn't require a buffer tube.

The CMMG .22 LR Conversion Kit makes for fun times at the firing range while shooting less expensive .22 LR ammunition!

To kick off this build, I ordered a bare upper receiver, a 7.5" barrel with a pistol-length gas system (though typically, a 1/7 twist might not be ideal for stabilizing lighter .22 LR projectiles), and a 7" M-Lok handguard. I also added an ejection port dust cover kit and a forward assist kit. While not necessary for a .22 LR, these components allow for the flexibility to switch to a 5.56 BCG if I ever decide to repurpose the upper for my SBR (short barrel rifle).

For the assembly, I used various parts I already had on hand, which helped keep costs down. This included a random muzzle brake, Amend2 pistol grip, Magpul MBUIS, an EOTech 512, and a charging handle—all previously tucked away in my home office in a box from previous projects.

The Amend2 grip provides a more natural angle for using an AR receiver as a pistol and features a nice feeling and aggressive grip texture for positive control.

Magpul backup iron sights (MBUIS), front and rear, give an alternate method of aiming this .22 LR plinking pistol.

An old EOTech 512 lying around made a natural choice to toss on this fun range plinker!

Leveraging the fact that the CMMG .22 LR setup doesn’t require a traditional buffer tube, I integrated an inexpensive airsoft side-folder adapter into the build. I repurposed the buffer tube that came with the RT15 lower, adding a Shockwave Technologies Blade Stealth pistol brace (also in my box of random gun parts) to complete the setup. This project not only tailored the RT15 to my preferences for a lightweight .22 LR plinker but also enhanced my enjoyment and satisfaction in creating something uniquely mine.

Even though this is a pistol, it is still hefty and, therefore, benefits from the addition of a pistol brace attachment, such as this one from Shockwave Technologies. Because there isn't a need for a conventional buffer tube like standard AR15 rifles, the addition of an airsoft side-folding adapter makes storage of this AR pistol in a range pistol bag a breeze!

The Rattlesnake Tactical RT15 Polymer Complete Lower Receiver offers a fantastic balance of performance, durability, and affordability. Whether you’re assembling a lightweight sport rifle or a robust tactical build, this lower receiver meets a broad range of needs with reliability. Its polymer construction, while lighter, does not skimp on strength or functionality, making it an excellent choice for your next AR-15 project.
