LaserMax was founded in 1989 by laser scientists Susan and Will Houde-Walter, who combined their expertise in laser physics with a passion for firearms innovation.

Susan taught laser physics at the University of Rochester while Will worked for optics companies, and they established their company in Rochester due to the city's stellar reputation for optics.

Originally developed for commercial laser modules, the company shifted focus to gun sights when Will's father, a former police commissioner, introduced them to law enforcement needs.
