Federal Lake City is responsible for providing 5.56 for the US military, and Federal creates some of the most reliable and consistent ammunition available. The issue for civilians has been that the military issue 5.56 that Federal makes cannot be used in nearly any indoor ranges due to how effective the rounds are at penetrating steel. Federal has remedied this by producing an advanced, lead free, none-corrosive, frangible cartridge with a soft point. This is a jacketed frangible and should not to be used for close range shooting against steel targets.

I jot this ammo for a range I was to attend and no fmj was allowed. Steel plates up close and down range were both unharmed by this load. Some of the students were using standard sp types that would cause damage up close.

CLEAN BURNING ~1250 FT/LBS MUZZLE ENERGY
I listed the approximate muzzle energy that I calculated after going through a box of 20 in my mid-length AR. I have been unable to find any ballistics specs on these anywhere - even on the Federal web page. So, I decided to produce my own. The felt recoil of these are comparable to the PMC .223 brass which have a muzzle energy of 1,250 ft/lbs. I filled one mag w/ 20 PMC's & another identical mag w/ 20 Federal frangibles and took them the range. I didn't know which mag held what when I did my test that consisted of swapping mags after firing five shots from each. Since I could not subjectively tell which round I was firing, I estimate that both rounds have approximately the same energy output. Accuracy was also comparable at 25 yards firing at two 6" targets, side-by-side. Groupings were all within a 1" circle.

Much better than the 100% frangible in that you wonâ€:tm:t have the projectile snapping in two pieces at the case mouth as you would with 100% frang. These rounds burn clean, run in everything from a 10.5†Mk18 to an 18†Mk12 Mod0. Great training round at a great price!
