The company was originally established as SDS Imports by founders including Scott Huff (West Point graduate and engineer), Tim Mulverhill (former head of product development at Kimber), Gaines Davis (engineer and competitive shooter), and Dave Biggers (former Army officer).

In October 2024, SDS Imports rebranded to SDS Arms to better reflect their expanded role beyond importing to designing and engineering firearms in America.
